We lost the great leader George Fernandez

Headlines today reiterate the sad fact “George Fernandez passes away”. Leader George Fernandez will, however, live on. He was a legend that lived a full and satisfying life. The leader George Fernandez died at the ripe age of eighty-eight in New Delhi. The man had been struggling with swine flu for a few days now. However, the memory of the trade unionist who was a force to reckon with will live on forever.

  • He was born on 3rd of June, 1930 to Join Fernandez and Alice Fernandez.
  • George Fernandez was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1967. He was a south Indian Christian who went on to make a name for himself in an area dominated North Indian Hindus.
  • He was elected to the lower house of the Parliament for a total of nine times! He served as a union minister several times as well. His expertise in knowing the grass root and the actual problems of the country were valued very highly.
  • The leader George Fernandez has held probably the most diverse portfolios in the history of the union ministry. He was at one time in charge of railways, at one-time industry and at one time even the defence! That man knew India to its very core.
  • He was amongst the several leaders arrested during the infamous emergency. However, he was also one of those leaders who have the Indira government a tough time before getting caught.
  • He was also one of those and charged of smuggling dynamite in the infamous Baroda Dynamite Case. It was an alleged plot that involved blowing up of railway tracks and government buildings.
  • He won the general elections of 1977 from Muzaffarpur while still in jail.
  • The leader George Fernandez is also the author of three books. The bills are, “What Ails the Socialist”, “Railway Strike of 1974” and “George Fernandez Speaks”.
  • Even though he held several portfolios in the union ministry, his was always the legacy of a trade unionist.
  • As a union minister, he had once ordered IBM and Coca Cola to leave the country.
