Bus accident on Yamuna Expressway: 29 Killed

A bus accident on Yamuna Expressway occurred Monday morning. At least 29 people were killed and 23 others were injured. The bus fell into a drain on the Expressway. Initial investigations have revealed that the accident occurred because the bus driver of the UPSRTC Jan Rath dozed off at the wheel.

The bus hit a divider and fell into a 40-feet deep gap between two flyovers. This happened near Milestone 161 (Jharna nullah). It falls under Etmadpur police jurisdiction of Agra district. The estimated time of the accident was at 4:15 am. The coordinator in-charge of Yamun Expressway retired Major Manish Singh said, “It seems the bus driver of the UPSRTC Jan Rath fell asleep on the wheel, breaking the divider and taking the bus into the 40-feet shallow gap between two flyovers of Yamuna Expressway.” Senior superintendent of Agra police, Babloo Kumar said, “Our teams have completed the rescue operation. As of now, 29 casualties have been reported. The injured have been shifted to hospital.”

The bus accident on Yamuna Expressway was truly unfortunate for the 52 passengers on board. They were heading to Delhi from Lucknow’s Alambagh depot. Agra police have claimed that among the 29 dead, there were 2 teenagers. Rest were male victims. The police have confirmed the identity of 18 deceased passengers.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his grief through a tweet (Click here to view).

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the passengers killed in the accident. He also instructed officials to expedite rescue work and provide proper treatment to the injured. UP DGP OP Singh has also ordered officials to carry out relief and rescue work with utmost dedication and sincerity.

The cause of the bus accident on Yamuna Expressway is still blurry. We extend our condolences to the families of those who died in the event.
