Nirbhaya Case Convicts Request Review
The Nirbhaya case was perhaps one of the most ground shattering cases for the country. It rattled the nerves of the nation and led to a lot of emphasis being put on the issue of woman safety. Looking at the magnitude of the crime, the repercussions were sure to be quite extreme for the convicts. And as expected, they were. He had received a death sentence.
But with less than a day to the scheduled hanging of the four Nirbhaya convicts, another petition was filed today before the Supreme Court. This was done Pawan Gupta. He had claimed that he was a minor when he committed the crime in the year 2012. This claim was dismissed the Supreme Court last week. Now, he has asked for a review of that decision. This came after the Supreme Court had made it clear that once rejected, an age claim cannot be contested repeatedly.
The convicts have filled multiple petitions. This is being seen as an attempt to delay the execution which is scheduled for tomorrow at 6 pm.
The young women who was dubbed ‘Nirbhaya’ became the victim of an heinous crime on December 16th, 2012. She was brutally gang raped six men, tortured with an iron rod and thrown off a moving bus. She died on the 29th of December.
This unimaginable act of savagery left the nation shell shocked. Protestors took to the streets. The demand for justice was unwavering. The country was hell bent on vengeance. One of the convicts was found hanging in jail. The youngest of them was released after three years in a reform home. Nirbhaya’s parents have stayed that they wish to see the four men hanged tomorrow. instead of being allowed to exploit the law to delay the process
