Sixteen percent reservation for Marathas: Bill unanimously passed
In what can be called a historic turn of events, the Maharashtra legislative Assembly has passed a bill that will be granting a sixteen percent reservation for Marathas. This is a decision that will either be forgotten the country and be accepted as completely normal or will change the course of history of this nation.
This bill was passed unanimously in the state’s legislative Assembly and will now grant a whooping sixteen percent reservations to the Marathas. This reservation will be enjoyed the Maratha community in education as well as jobs in the state.
It was a brilliant move to placate the community after they had been protesting and demanding this. Protests that had in fact turned violent in July and then again in August. The Maratha community had launched a huge campaign to obtain reservations and was declared a backward community in accordance to their demand. This is a potentially influential community that constitutes of thirty percent of the state’s population and the government awarded them the reservation that they asked for.
However, there is a blip in the story. The decision to grant sixteen percent reservation for Marathas is something that is more than the fifty percent reservation allowed the Supreme Court of India and hence faces some serious legalities. However, seeing that fifty two percent seats of Maharashtra are already reserved, an additional sixteen percent is something that will either be seen as something normal or will cause an uproar. There will be no intermediate.
The journey of protests
The demand for reservations for Marathas started last year when this largely agrarian community to which majority of the leaders of Maharashtra belong decided that these leaders are not doing anything for them and they will do better if they recovered received a quota as the Scheduled Castes receiving them are better off than them. The protests were usually peaceful and on the spirit of democracy.
That was, however, before the suicide of a 28 year old after which the protests took a violent turn and culminated in a sixteen percent reservation for Marathas in Maharashtra.
