How to stop procrastination?
The human brain is hardwired in such a manner that it likes to do those things first which provide the instant gratification to our senses. We often put the things off for tomorrow thinking that we have enough time left at our disposal to get the task completed, while in reality, it may not be true. And once we get caught in this trap of procrastinating, it becomes our daily ritual to hold the things for tomorrow. Over a period of time, this habit gets so ingrained in our mind that we even don’t realize what blunder we are doing every day until we face some severe repercussions of procrastinating. So how to stop procrastination?
In order to stop procrastination in our day to day life while carrying out various tasks, first of all, we need to understand what exactly leads to procrastination, despite the fact that nobody enjoys its effects.
We start procrastinating in our day to day life when we don’t prioritize the tasks properly. Let’s say, if there are 10 tasks to be done in a day, it’s very important that we prioritize those tasks as per their urgency and importance, so that in case if we fall short in carrying out some tasks due to the sudden emergence of other commitments, which require our involvement, we would still have completed the more important tasks. And other less important tasks could be done anytime we get some time. Even if we miss out those things for a few days, it wouldn’t cause much loss to us.
Another very important thing to keep in mind to stop procrastination is to analyse the short term and long term consequences of the task that we are performing. And, to know whether or not we are doing the right task at the right time. Once we realize this, we will easily understand as to what to do and what not to do. For instance, after a few minutes of sitting in the chair to complete one topic of the book, our mind gets distracted a notification of new comedy video of our favourite Youtuber, and we start watching the video even without completing our chapter. And once we are done with one video, we come across other new trending videos in your YouTube feed. We keep on watching many videos one after another, only to realise later that we have wasted the three hours that we had decided to study.
Since the procrastination is one of the major reasons people don’t succeed in their lives and succumb to instant gratification, overriding the important tasks, it becomes very necessary that we stop procrastination. That can be possible only when we are aware and responsible enough to utilize our time prioritizing the tasks before it gets too late.
