UGC warns 21 DU colleges running without principals
Over 22 of the 77 colleges of Delhi University(DU) are operating without a permanent principal. UGC has issued a warning to 21 of these colleges. Funds the UGC shall be withdrawn if full-time principals are not appointed within the given deadline.
The Teachers’ Association of the university has continuously been demanding to streamline the appointment process. UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain said,“As per the latest available update, it has been noticed that many colleges have not complied with the directives of MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) or UGC to appoint regular principals. The colleges are once again requested to expedite the process of selection of a full-time regular principal in your college. Further, they are hererequested to inform the date of interview for the post of the Principal latest August 31 failing which the UGC will be constrained to withhold the release of further grants.”
After the notice was initially issued, only one college had appointed a full-time principal. Some other colleges are in the process of doing the same. Jain added,“If they do not do so in the given time frame, then their grants and benefits will be stopped. A full-time principal ensures having a good administration and maintaining an academic environment.”
Some of the colleges that are acting without full-time principals are the flagship colleges of Delhi University. These include institutions such as Hindu College, Sri Ram College of Commerce, Kirori Mal College and Kamla Nehru College. These colleges are either being supervised an acting principal or an officer on special duty(OSD). Hindu College’s post of principal has been vacant for the past few years. An acting principal has been holding the reins for a long time.
