Rishi Kapoor confirms: Kapoor family puts RK Studios up for sale

Raj Kapoor’s iconic RK Studios is up for sale. This news has been confirmed his son, Rishi Kapoor.

The sale is taking place due to a massive fire which occurred in the year 2017. The decision to sell the establishment was taken collectively the family. The decision to sell RK Studios was made after the family was made aware of the renovation costs. It was calculated that the revenue would not be enough to keep the establishment running.

Rishi Kapoor stated,“For a while, we did juggle with the idea of renovating the place with state-of-the-art technology. However, in reality it isn’t always possible for a phoenix to rise from the ashes. We Kapoors are very emotional lot but then… The investment in rebuilding the studio would just not have yielded sufficient revenue to keep it going. Believe me, we had to take the larger picture into account and take a level-headed decision. Even before the fire, for years R. K. Studio had become a huge white elephant, toting up losses. The few bookings we would get from films, TV serials and ad shoots would expect free parking space, air-conditioning and discounts.”

Rishi Kapoor had previously stated after the unfortunate fire incident that the studio could be rebuilt. But the costumes and memorabilia of the RK Studios were permanently lost to the flames.

The studio had a lot of history associated with it. RK Flims produced movies such as Barsaat, Awaara, Boot Polish, Shri 420 and Jaagte Raho. The studio also acted as the venue for movies like Jis Desh Me Ganga Behti Hain, Mera Naam Joker, Bobby, the debut film for Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Prem Rog, Ram Teri Ganga Maili, which was Raj Kapoor’s last film before his death in June 1988.

The selling of the RK Studio will surely make a landmark moment in the history of Indian cinema.
