Hope for Ayodhya: 2018 won’t become another 1992
The state government is all geared up to ensure that no drastic incident takes place in Ayodhya during VHP’s Dharm Sabha on Sunday. Even though tight security arrangements have been made to prevent any trouble, keeping the past in mind, the present mood in Ayodhya can in no way be compared to the one pervading in 1992 when the Babri Masjid was demolished. The feeling of communalism that did exist in that period, fortunately, has not yet been realised this year.
In 1992, the rooftop of every second Hindu household had a saffron flag fluttering atop in support of Ram Temple movement. Locals across cities made ‘puri-sabji’ packets for karsevaks heading to Ayodhya. The cries of “Ram lalla hum aayenge … mandir … ” were reverberating in every village and town.
BJP’s Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lal Krishna Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and VHP chief Ashok Singhal who was called ‘Hindu Hriday Samrat’ were leading the masses. Even, all the four Shankaracharyas had extended their support. Although there are BJP governments in both centre and state now, people are not expecting much unrest.
The then CM Kalyan Singh had freezed the state machinery to allow crowds to swell to dangerous levels in Ayodhya. This ultimately led to the demolition of Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992. The Ram temple movement had hit its peak during that time. Fiery speeches from sadhus and sadhvis were igniting rage.
Muslim firebrand leaders like Syed Shahabuddin provoked Hindus with their inciting speeches. Non- BJP parties were pandering to Muslims. This further consolidated mobilisation.
This time, Muslims have maintained a silence. Congress has adopted a soft Hindutva policy. BJP leaders have been referring to Ram temple in election campaigns in poll-bound states. But no Union Minister is making any statement since the matter is sub judice.
It is clear that the violence of 1992 won’t be repeated this year in Ayodhya.
