Generic Drugs and their role in Public Health
why aren’t India using generic drugs?? Why are generic drugs have much lesser cost than patent drugs . Patent drugs are those drugs which are under the manufacturer for 7years he/she will be have the rights in the drug for the given period of time but the drugs produced after the patent period are know as generic drugs. But you do we buy the generic drug at the same cost as the patent drug.
Many pharmaceutical companies are following the same cost even after the expiry of patent where as the drug preparation takes very low cost.
Many consumers don’t know much about ptent and generic drugs and are paying much higher cost than it is actually worth . It is the major advantages for pharmaceutical companies and charging the price as they want. It is responsibility of the government to make the people aware about these drugs.
And we can the price difference between same drugs belonging to different companies. Where companies change only one or two ingredients in the drug but the active ingredient used is same and the ingredients other than main /active ingredients are biologically same bt chemically different due to there molecular structure but the cost is nearly equal but when it combines with main drug and released in market the cost varies a lot and are sold under patent drug cost where the drug is no more a patent drug. { patent drugs manufacturing and production is withhold its owner and when the patent is over the other manufacturing companies manufacturer it changing ingredients, production method.} .
If we have enough knowledge but these drugs we can have healthy and better life at cost . Consumers can buys these medicines at very lower .
If the government takes the steps and look into it the consumers will be very beneficial government should take the up to date reports from the pharmacy control of India and should know the details of drugs which are expired from patent period and the drug under generic.
If the system works efficiently the cost of many drugs can be sold under much lesser price and the treatment will be available at very less cost so that poors can also get best treatment .
Many cancer drugs which cost more than 1000 can be sold at less than its half price than the original price i.e patent price. If we get generic drugs the death ratio will be reduced and no person will die without treatment, as it will be available to very citizen. Hence, it would be a great step for public health.
