Witness the Super Blood Wolf Moon today

Today is the day that the rare trifecta of a total lunar eclipse, super blood moon, and a “Wolf Moon” occurs. It is known as the Super Blood Wolf Moon.

Tonight, many people across the Americas, parts of western Europe, and Africa will be able to witness this legendary avatar of the moon. This event is particularly important because it is going to be the last total lunar eclipse until May 2021. Unfortunately, for India, some parts of Asia, and Australia, there isn’t going to be anything special in the skies. That is because they are going to be facing the Sun at the time of the lunar eclipse. Rest of the world will get to see some of the eclipses at moon rise or moon set depending on the time in their region.

According to NASA, the complete lunar eclipse event is going to last three hours and 17 minutes. The beginning of the super blood wolf moon, when the partial lunar eclipse starts, is set for 7:33 pm PT on January 20 (3:33 am GMT, January 21 or 9:03 am IST, January 21). The full lunar eclipse will start at 8:41 pm PT on January 20 (4:41 am GMT, January 21 or 10:11 am IST, January 21) and end at 9:43 pm PT (5:43 am GMT or 11:13 am IST). The complete lunar event will be over at 10:50 pm PT (6:50 am GMT or 12:20 pm IST).

A total lunar eclipse is an astronomical event that happens when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are perfectly lined up and the Earth blocks all of Sun’s light from reaching the Moon.

The Super part of the name comes from the size and brightness of the Moon. The Blood part comes from the colour of the Moon during a total lunar eclipse. Since this particular total lunar eclipse is falling in the winter, it gets the “wolf” part of the name. Hence the name Super Blood Wolf Mood.
