7 reasons why you should develop the habit of reading.
The habit of reading is something that you may find common among most of the successful people in this world. This is, in fact, true as various studies have shown that people with the habit of reading are likely to be more successful than those who simply squander their time in doing unproductive tasks. In this article, I will try to explain some of the amazing benefits of reading which will definitely motivate you to give a thought to embrace this habit as soon as possible, so that you don’t regret in future not to have developed this habit in early years of your life.
1- Busts stress and anxiety-
When you read a book of the genre that interests you the most, you easily get immersed into it forgetting all the worries and tensions that you might be facing in your personal or professional life, at least for the time being. As watching a movie on the TV screen gets you completely immersed into the story, likewise reading a book, particularly a novel with so many twists and turns, keeps your mind engaged. Once you are actively engaged in something which pleases your senses, your stress and anxiety are bound to vanish.
2-Helps in curing brain-related diseases like Alzheimer and Dementia-
Various studies have shown that the daily habit of reading helps the patients of Alzheimer and Dementia. Just like any other muscle in the body, the brain requires the exercise to be fit and healthy, which helps the brain muscles to remain intact. And, there is not any better exercise for the brain than that of reading.
3-Increases focus and concentration-
We all know how powerful and vital role increased concentration plays in one’s growth and success in life. Reading a book for few hours in stretch actually increases your focus and concentration. The focus is not something one can develop overnight. It takes regular practice to develop a laser-like focus. And, the habit of reading plays a key role in increasing the focus and concentration, as one most important pre-requisites to get the best out of reading a book is to stay focused while reading. Thus, the more you read, the better focused you get in your everyday life.
4- Knowledge enrichment-
I don’t think I need to stress this point much, as we all know how much reading helps us enrich our knowledge base which we otherwise wouldn’t have ever known. By reading, we get to know various ideas, interesting perspectives, and inspiring stories of successful people. Within hours, you get to know about a specific research, valuable lessons in life, or something really insightful for which somebody has toiled day in and out for years to know and learn.
5- Provides company and kills loneliness-
If you are somebody who doesn’t like to hang out or party, and don’t have a group of friends to spend time with, then a habit of reading can provide you the feel to be in the company of many people, characters, and authors while sitting in the couch of your room or anywhere else you prefer, such as a garden, balcony, terrace etc. You feel like as if the author of the book is trying to talk to you. And once you are lost in a book, there is no way loneliness will come closer to you.
6- Imagination power and analytical skill-
There is no denial of the fact that the habit of reading develops the imagination in our minds. The kind of book or article you read decides the kind of imagination you will have. Because when you start reading something, the words written in the book or screen are nothing but mere lifeless texts. They get the value and meaning once your mind starts creating pictures in the mind as per the story or message words want to convey. Besides, while reading a book, particularly with an interesting plot and suspension, you develop an analytical power to imagine what could unfold next.
7- Expands vocabulary and improves command over language-
The more you read, the better you get at the language. That’s why it is often advised to adopt a habit of reading as much as possible in order to expand the vocabulary and improve the command over the language. When you learn a word reading a paragraph in a book or article, you get a full idea as to in which context the word will be most suitable to use. This way of expanding the vocabulary is way more effective and long-lasting than that of simply cramming the difficult words from a dictionary without knowing the actual context in which they are used. Apart from that, reading helps you become better at both writings and speaking the language.
