This is a very proud moment for us all. It is our best batsmen Virat Kohli who has gained his position as number one batsmen in test cricket. He is only the 7th Indian batsmen to achieve such. Before the Birmingham test, it was known that Kohli isn’t that far behind Steve Smith who has had a hold onto the position since December 2015.

With his brilliant century innings of 149 runs and a 51 run knock in the 2nd innings, Virat Kohli beat Steve Smith and became the best test batsmen in the world. Kohli now leads Smith but will have to maintain his form in the remaining four tests to finish as number one in tests.

Many might not know this but Kohli is also the number 1 batsmen in ODI cricket which makes him the cricketer with two first positions in 2 most famous forms of cricket.

Apart from Kohli and Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir, Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag and Dilip Vengsarkar are the other India batsmen to have achieved number one rankings during their careers.

However, at 934 points, Kohli has become India’s highest-ranked batsman, 14th overall, on the all-time tally of points.

Kohli had entered the Birmingham Test on 903 points, 13 points behind Gavaskar, and is now ahead of the ICC Cricket Hall of Famer 18 points.

However, other Indian batsmen lost ground after the first Test with KL Rahul (19th) and Ajinkya Rahane (22nd) slipping one and three places respectively. Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dawan now share 25th position after slipping two and one spots respectively.

For England, Jonny Bairstow jumped four places to be placed at joint No. 12 with Kraigg Brathwaite of the West Indies. He scored 70 and 28 at Edgbaston. But Alistair Cook 17th (down four places) and Ben Stokes 33rd (down five places) lost ground.

If Kohli can deliver another strong performance in the second Test at Lord’s, then he can break into the top-10 leapfrogging Matthew Hayden, Kallis and AB de Villiers, whose highest points tally was 935 each.
