SC ban crackers: sellers hopes are in fumes

The after effects of Diwali last year and burning of corps residue in the north caused thick clouds of toxic smog, which was seen all over the capital and regions around it. It depreciated the air quality and posed a threat to the health of children and elderly. Keeping in mind the devastating effect of crackers last year, a bench of Justice A.K.Sikri, A.M. Sapre and Ashok Bhusan , modified the last year sep’16 judgment and took a major decision on 9th October , placing ban on sale of crackers in Delhi and NCR till November 1’17 in a bed to test whether a Diwali without fire crackers this year will have a positive effects on “the health of citizens and a steadily deteriorating air quality . And all the temporary license to sell crackers are already suspended.
Bench pointed out the various diverse effects of burning crackers and also mentioned the efforts made media, government and societies, creating awareness of the harms of bursting crackers while passing the judgment. Though there is a ban on selling of crackers, it doesn’t mean this Diwali will be cracker free because there is no ban on using crackers. So it is possible to burst crackers clandestinely and claim that they are stored from the last year. This will have limited impact. Nonetheless it is a great step in the right direction.
This decision also created havoc in the sellers and there are a numbers of vociferous protests from retailers in Delhi – who are left with sizeable unsold stocks. the livelihood of these people are on stake , according to fire crackers sellers there will be a loss of approx. 110 cores if SC didn’t lifted the ban and lead to the loss of jobs of many people who worked in the crackers manufacturing plants . Although many activist, environmentalist , doctors and even children are welcoming this decision .
Traditionally Diwali is a festive of lights –the light mark the anniversary of return of Lord Rama to ayodhoya and at a philosophical level to mark the victory of light over darkness. SC is requesting everyone to ‘burn the light and live’, take a step to keep our environment and give our young generation a clean air to breathe. And many states like Maharashtra, Punjab are welcoming this ban and also asked the citizen of their state to avoid use of crackers.
