Prime Minister Modi praised the role of IITs in nation-building.
Prime Minister Modi praised the role of IITs in nation-building as he was invited as the Chief guest at the 56th annual convocation of IIT-Bombay. In his keynote address to the students, he lauded the role of the IITs in nation building and urged the major engineering institutions to focus more on the quality rather than the quantity of the students.
“Every year lakhs of students pass out of the engineering colleges, but not everyone is equipped with right skill sets and the expertise in his/her domain. Hence, it’s the collective responsibility of institutions and teachers to bring improvements in engineering curriculum and system” said Prime Minister Modi.
He awarded 3 Gold medals, 43 Silver medals, and 36 Awards for Excellence in Thesis Work, before delivering the keynote address to the students.
Prime Minister Modi also talked about the initiatives taken his government to improve the quality but laid emphasis on the need to play a vital role the institutions and teachers.
“The government was instituting programmes to give opportunities to engineering students under the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF) aimed at attracting the talent pool of the country to doctoral (PhD) programmes of IITs and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for carrying out research in cutting-edge science and technology domains” He added.
Encouraging students to be bold and courageous in their career, Mr. Modi said IITs were at the forefront of development of new technology and innovation, and would play crucial role in the creation of a ‘new India’, with help from new-age technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Big Data Analysis and Machine Learning.
The convocation ceremony — held inside the IIT’s lush green campus at Powai — was also attended Minister for Human Resources Development Prakash Javadekar, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Governor C.H. Vidyasagar Rao.
