India deports Rohingya Muslims back to the land they ran from
The Home Ministry of India is all set to deport seven Myanmar citizens to their home country via Moreh in Manipur. While the Home Ministry declined to confirm if they are Rohingya Muslims or not, it is widely believed that they do indeed belong to the persecuted community. It will be the first instance when India deports Rohingya Muslims.
Authorities say that Naypyidaw has duly verified their addresses in Myanmar and their travel permits have been issued. When India deports Rohingya Muslims, it will be completely lawful and constitutional. The central government had asked the states last year to identify the Myanmar citizens who had illegally entered the border and obtain their biometric with the purpose of deporting them. The seven Rohingya Muslims that India is going to deport were detected Assam Police and arrested in 2012. They have since then served a prison sentence after conviction under the Foreigners Act and have been living in a detention camp in Silchar, Assam.
As India deports Rohingya Muslims, the Supreme Court is hearing a petition that seeks to prevent the government from deporting Rohingya immigrants considering the inhuman treatment they are running away from.
Over the last few years, the human rights crisis faced the Rohingya community in the recent years has been a huge issue before the international community. This community belongs to the Rakhine province of Myanmar and has been trying to avoid religious persecution migrating to other countries. Over the years, more than forty thousand Rohingya Muslims have crossed India’s borders and tries to find safety in the country that claims to be proud of its diversity and values like “Atithi Devo Bhava”. As India deports Rohingya Muslims on Thursday, which legally it has the right to; glimmers of hope will be extinguished for an entire community that no one wants to grant basic rights too.
On Thursday, these seven “people” will be taken to Moreh and will be made to cross the border into a land they ran away from to save themselves.
