Congress’s new promise- Farm loan waiver for all

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi had announced a basic income scheme for the poor. And as the election draws near, the bundle of promises just keeps increasing from the Congress front. Today, he announced a farm loan waiver for all farmers across the country if the party comes to power.

The promise of farm loan waiver had previously earned the Congress seats in the heartland states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The recent assembly elections are proof of the fact that the loan waiver schemes are quite popular among the public. Rahul Gandhi also bragged about the fact that the new governments are really efficient. They have started delivering on it too within days of coming to power.

“Loan waiver will be granted to all the farmers across the country if the Congress comes to power,” said Rahul Gandhi. This was at a rally in Patna today. He was sharing the stage with ally Tejashwi Yadav, Sharad Yadav and other opposition leaders from the state.

He added, “Modi-ji has insulted the farmers of Bihar and the rest of the country,” he said. “If you insult the farmers, then the farmers will give you an answer. Farmers are saying ‘we want Congress, not the BJP’.”

The Congress announcement makes its way into the party’s agenda just two days after the government announced a cash transfer scheme for small and marginal farmers in the interim budget. The need to provide relief to farmers is being seen as a priority among the parties. They are counting farmer satisfaction as a key factor that could influence the coming elections.

Farm loan waivers, however, are not seen as a proper way to address the problems of the farm sector. The government had opted for a cash transfer scheme after states like Odisha and Telangana. Is the Congress going on the right track? Will they fulfil their promises? What do you think?
