Air Qualiy Index Reached Dangerous Levels In Delhi NCR Yet Again
This year again air quality index reached dangerous category in Delhi NCR on the happy occasion of Diwali. The next morning after Diwali saw Anand Vihar with an air quality index of an alarmingly high 999. A similar air quality index was recorded in several other areas of the capital and surrounding regions like the Major Dhyan Chand National stadium area. The lowest was recorded was at the US embassy which was 459, falling in the hazardous category.
There were several restrictions imposed to prevent exactly what happened: the air quality index reached dangerous levels. The restrictions included a two-hour window and permission to burst only what was labelled as “green crackers”. These orders were issued the Supreme Court but the people of Delhi did not seem to care that just last year air quality index reached dangerous levels causing breathing problems and irritable eyes to many and continued bursting crackers even after the 10 pm deadline.
By 11 pm the air quality index had reached 302 which according to the Central Pollution Control Board is “very poor”. The deterioration of the air quality index started from 7 pm itself on the Diwali evening.
To completely understand what happened we need to know that air quality level between 0-50 is considered good while that between 51-100 is satisfactory. The air quality index reached dangerous levels of above 300 7 pm itself.
The Supreme Court had allowed bursting of firecrackers only between 8 pm and 10 pm and had allowed the manufacture and sale of only “green crackers” known for their low sound and light emissions and use of less harmful chemicals. The Supreme Court had also issued directives to the police to ensure the ban on the firecrackers, holding the station officers responsible in event of the violation.
There were, however, several violations reported and the police had promised action while once again people in Delhi and surrounding regions have women up to toxic levels of air pollution.
