Obama speaks on Birth Anniversary of Nelson Mandela
It was Johannesburg, South Africa where the former president of the United States of America made his most prominent speech since leaving the Oval Office. The occasion was the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela as the 15000 people jam-packed into the auditorium heard one of the most iconic speeches of the one of the most iconic men on earth. In his speech, Obama mainly spoke on the need to stand up for democracy and the current state of politics.
“I am not being alarmist, I’m simply stating the facts,” Obama said. “Look around — strongman politics are ascendant, suddenly, whereelections and some pretence of democracy are maintained, the form of it, but those in powers seek to undermine every institution or norm that gives democracy meaning.” It is a “moment in time in which two very different visions of humanity’s future compete for the hearts and minds of citizens around the world,” he said talking about the current state of worldwide politics. “Too much of politics today seems to reject the very concept of objective truth,” Obama said. “People just make stuff up.” Obama also made a reference to the interference of Russia in the latest American Elections “social media has proved to be just as effective in promoting hatred and paranoia and propaganda and conspiracy theories.”
Russia’s president Vladimir Putin, on the other hand, had issued a joint news conference with the current president of the States Donald Trump just the day before. The common consensus is that no president of the United States has ever so aggressively gone against established policy and against his own advisors. Even Trump loyalists are criticizing him for cosying up to his Russian counterpart especially against the Moscow interference of 2016 elections.
Trump, to his credit, refuses to backtrack even in the face of an angry horde of critics. He is taking his country on a new diplomatic path of nuclear harmony with its arch nemesis. Trump is ready to upset its allies in lieu of this bravado. The most noticeable criticism of his actions, however, came from his predecessor. Obama in his high profile Johannesburg speech rebuffed Trump policies, such as separating migrant families at the southern U.S. border. Trump’s response to the speech along with other facts those are actually important to prevent the political crisis Obama spoke about, however, remains unknown.
