Karnataka Politics takes a cribbing turn

Karnataka Crisis, Indian politics out of Shape

Haradanahalli Devegowda Kumaraswamy, the 30th chief minister of Karnataka has been making news since he cried on Saturday while addressing a gathering in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

According to the JD(S) leader, he felt like the Hindu God Shiva who had to swallow poison for the greater good. The poison here being the coalition his party with made with Congress to form a government in the state to keep the Bhartiya Janta Party out of power.

“You are standing with bouquets to wish me, as one of your brothers became CM and you all are happy, but I’m not,” he said. “I know the pain of coalition government… I became Vishkanth (Lord Shiva) and swallowed the pain of this government,” The chief minister had given indications of his unhappiness over the past as well when he said “I am at the mercy of Congress. I am responsible for the development of the state that is different. I have to do my job as CM, I have to take permission from Congress leaders, without their permission I can’t do anything, they have given me support.”

However, it is widely believed that he was referring to the issue of loan waiver for the farmers. Since his election to the post, Kumaraswamy has been under enormous pressure to issue this waiver. The government of Karnataka had announced 34,000 crore loan waiver in the recent state budget. However, the government had to face further onslaughts of criticism and demands and announced an increase the waiver to  44,700 crores.

The coffers of the government of Karnataka however, are not prepared to spend the additional amount. Thus it is this huge financial strain on the state treasury that took the form of the chief minister’s tears. Also when the bill was tabled, there was an increase in the tax levied on people which brought about the expected wrath of the common people and political parties alike.

The chief minister however only referred to the obstacles that he is facing while wanting to serve the people due to a coalition government while shedding tears. Congress did respond to him with criticism as well as suggestions to keep working

“You’ve to face problems. Simply expressing won’t give good message to people who supported secular parties. Kumaraswamy should be courageous to face such circumstances” was the statement from Mallikarjun Kharge.
