Sanju Movie Review: Ranbir Kapoor justifies the Hype as Sanjay Dutt

The most awaited Bollywood film of the year hit the silver screen today and unarguably it is the best film of the year thus far. The trailer attracted an incredible amount of hype and it is fair to say that Rajkumar Hirani’s direction justifies this hype. Who would have thought that Ranbir Kapoor would fit into Sanjay Dutt’s shoes with such ease and perfection but remind you, it’s not a day’s work. Ranbir has perfected the role of a man who is an actor profession, the amount of hard work is unimaginable.

The trailer attracted comments such as “It’s a propaganda film” but No. Sanju isn’t a propaganda film, it depicts intricacies of Sanjay Dutt’s life. Hirani does all this through a well-chosen narrative device: Sanjay Dutt trying to convince an acclaimed London-based biographer called Winnie Diaz to make him her next subject, while she investigates his claims about himself.

Rajkumar Hirani’s direction can make you laugh and cry at the same time, he takes us through the emotional journey but keeps the humorous touch intact. The motive of the film is to tell people that there are two sides to everything, the director wants to present a clear picture rather than a misunderstood story.

The flawless performances the actors have further enhanced to the beauty of the story. Rajkumar Hirani has divided the film into two halves: The first half takes the viewers through Sanjay Dutt’s drug addiction, the song ‘Kar Har Maidaan Fateh’ will send a chill down your spine as Sanjay strives hard to come out of his addiction. The second half takes the viewers through his fight against the legal system to clear his name from the 1993 Mumbai blasts.

The first few minutes of the film show two contrasting tales of friendship. One played Vicky Kaushal who is playing the role of Sanjay’s United States based friend Kamli and the other played Jim Sarbh who is portrayed as a fake friend who lures Sanju into drugs. An emphasis has been put on the father-son relationship of Sunil Dutt(played Paresh Raval) and Sanjay Dutt. There are a lot of moments which will make you emotional on this rollercoaster ride.

Sanju is a gripping story, it’s a dramatic Bollywood film but at the same time, it shows the reality of Sanju’s life in an exciting and wonderful manner. The sensuality of each character makes up for the faults in the film and that makes it a must-watch.
