Pakistan views US aid cancellation as a means to improve Indo-US relations
Recently, US cancelled a $300 million aid to Pakistan. This was seen as a result of the America first policy taken Trump. A Pentagon spokesman had said that the fund cancellation was due to a lack of Pakistani decisive action in support of the South Asia strategy.
Pakistani Senator, Mushahid Hussain said that the $300 million fund cancellation plan in coalition funds for Islamabad is “a sop for India”. He also said that this decision will undermine the visit of the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo which was scheduled to be held this week.
Hussain heads the foreign affair committee in Pakistani Senate. He believes that the US decision was taken in order to form a front against China, who is Islamabad’s important ally.
Hussain tweeted,”American stoppage of $300m Coalition Support Funds(CSF) undermines Pompeo visit to Islamabad and is a sop to India as he seeks to solidify Indo-US front against Pakistan’s best friend, China; earlier $500m CSF was stopped, all this is money owed to Pakistan US, NOT aid!”
It was announced in January the Pentagon that the aid known as coalition support funds will be stopped to Pakistan. Soon after, US cancelled $500m in such aids. But Pakistan had still hoped for the $300m aid, as the Pentagon had not taken any steps to suspend it before summer.
CSF refers to the money which is given to coalition partners in return for logistic and military support to US military operations. Hussain said that the $300m is not an aid but a payment owed to Pakistan. That is because Pakistan has sacrificed a lot in aiding the US in the “war against terror”.
Is the cancellation of the aid to Pakistan truly a sop to India? If this is to create a front against China? If yes, how will India react to such an alignment and formation offer from the US?
