North Korea agrees to shut down missile sites permanently

Recently, a huge stride towards maintaining peace has been taken Kim Jong-un. North Korea has decided to ‘permanently’ its key missile facilities. This decision was made in the presence of foreign experts.

The country is also willing to close its main nuclear complex if the United States of America take reciprocal action. Speaking at a joint news conference, the President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in and the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un said that they agreed to turn Korea into “a land of peace without nuclear weapons and nuclear threats.”

Kim said that he would be visiting Seoul in the near future. This will be a historic event as it is the first visit of a North Korean leader to the South Korean capital.

Moon wanted to engineer a proposal that can implement a combined proposal for the North’s denuclearisation and a joint declaration ending the 1950-53 Korean War. The proposition for North Korean denuclearisation came up in Kim’s summit with Trump as well. But no initiatives were taken to forward the vague promises that were made in the summit.

North Korea has not agreed to complete denuclearization. They have given no indication that they are willing to give up on their nuclear arsenal. They are also seeking relief from crippling international sanctions. NK has agreed to stop nuclear and missile tests. But they did not allow international inspections for a dismantlement of its only known nuclear site in May. This has drawn a lot of criticism. That’s because their actions cannot be verified and can be easily reversed.

The developments between North Korea and South Korea do not seem to be quite promising at the moment. But this is just the first step towards realising the dream of world peace and unity. A lot of stairs remain to be climbed and a lot of obstacles to be averted.
