India tries to counter Chinese influence via relations with Nepal

Once again India tries to counter Chinese influence as both countries rise as dominant global powers. China, in what seems to be like forever has been trying to increase its influence in the Indian Ocean as well as the Indian subcontinent. One of the major points on which India tries to counter Chinese influence is its activities in the landlocked country of Nepal which acts as a buffer between the two exponentially growing powers that are India and China as they vigorously compete in the fields of military and economy.

In what the international media calls a daring move as India tries to counter Chinese influence especially in Nepal.  India aims to do this starting the first passenger train on broad gauge between India and Nepal in December. The train will run on a 34 kilometre stretch between Jayanagar in Bihar and Kurtha in Janakpur in South-Eastern Nepal. The immigration check post between the two countries will be manned either State government or the Bureau of Immigration.

Nepal’s reaction to the move

Nepal also looks quite excited about this as India tries to counter Chinese influence as it has informed its railways that the section will be open with four trips, to begin with. The authorities of Nepal have also made their wish to run freight trains on the designated section well known. The citizens of both the countries will require no visa to cross the borders via this stretch.

This will be one of the many attempts on India’s behalf to have better relations with Nepal. This comes as a crucial step after China tried investing heavily in Nepal following the rough patch that the Indo-Nepal relations had hit. The initiation of the Ayodhya to Janakpur bus service was also a step towards a similar direction.

The countries of Nepal and India share historic ties and a culture dating back to centuries, this is a major driving force behind the two countries maintaining more than cordial ties.
