Kofi Annan will be remembered as a global statesman and philanthropist.
Kofi Annan, a Ghanaian diplomat and former Secretary General of United Nation, will be remembered for his remarkable efforts in the direction of bringing peace, prosperity, development and harmony across the globe. An international statesman profession and a philanthropist nature, the first black Secretary General of UN breathed his last in Switzerland on Saturday.
Born in 1938 in Ghana, Kofi Annan began his career in foreign diplomacy in 1962 in the World Health Organization. He was also head of UN peacekeeping in 1994 in the wake of Rwanda massacre. Later on, he went on to become the Secretary General of UN not for once, but for two consecutive terms from 1996-2006.
Under his tenure as the Secretary-General of the United Nations, he introduced the Millennium Development Goals with an aim to make the countries committed to ending the poverty within 15 years. Under his leadership two intergovernmental bodies, the Peacebuilding Commission and the Human Rights Council were established. In 2001, Kofi Annan was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace along with the United Nations.
After demitting the office of Secretary-General in 2007, he founded Kofi Annan foundation with an aim to mobilize the global political will on issues of development, peace and poverty elimination. His concerns for global issues and the commitment to do his every bit to ensure this world a better place to live for everyone earned him the respect of the nations across the globe. All the messages from the world leaders remembering Kofi Annan have one thing in common- that is the appreciation for his humanitarian efforts in the world. That’s why, António Guterres, the current UN Secretary-General, has rightly called him a champion for peace and a guiding force for good.
