“The main aim is to oust the BJP” Says Mamta Banerjee

After a meeting with the top leaders of major opposition parties in the wake of upcoming Lok Sabha election, the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamta Banerjee told the media that the 2019 Lok Sabha election would be fought under the collective leadership and the main aim would be to oust the BJP.

Ms Banerjee met all leaders expected to play a key role in the Lok Sabha election: Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Samajwadi Party leader Ramgopal Yadav, JD(S) leader Deve Gowda and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. DMK’s Tiruchi Siva, Congress leader Ashwini Kumar, Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan and BJP rebel Kirti Azad. Later in the evening, Mr Kejriwal too met her. She is also reported to have met L K Advani as a courtesy visit and to ask about his health and well being.

On being asked whether she will be the opposition’s face against the Narendra Modi in the next Lok Sabha Election, She responded quoting the lines of Rabindra Nath Tagore which reads “All of us are kings in democracy”.

Targeting the BJP government over the National Register of Citizens (NRC) update exercise in Assam, Ms Banerjee said, “The NRC is a global issue because 40 lakh people have been deleted from a list of 2.2 crore people. Only BJP voters will have space in this country and non-BJP voters will be isolated,” Ms Banerjee said, speaking at the Trinamool Congress’s Parliamentary Party office.

While countering the Amit Sah and Rajnath Singh, Mamta Banerjee said that Bangladesh is not a terrorist country and they say that those who come from Bangladesh are illegal migrants and infiltrators. But, they themselves are the real infiltrators as they dictate what to eat and what to wear, she added.
