Row over National Registers of Citizens (NRC) of Assam

The government of Assam has released the final draft of the National Registers of Citizens (NRC) of Assam after its first draft that was released in January 2018. The draft includes the name of those who were able to prove that they were in Assam before 24 March 1971. Almost 40 lakh people have been left out of the final draft of National Registers of Citizens, which has created a political furore with the opposition parties such as Congress and TMC blaming the BJP of dividing the people and reducing its own citizens to the status of refugees. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee has warned that there will be a bloodbath and civil war in the country.

While the BJP has unequivocally stated that not a single Indian has been excluded from NRC. Only those who couldn’t present the required credentials to be called an Indian as per the prescribed NRC laws have been left out. However, the NRC list is not final, and every person will be given ample time to prove their citizenship as per the due procedure of law under and procedure established the Supreme Court.

BJP has also criticized the opposition for communalizing the issue of illegal immigrants to gain a political mileage. While speaking in the Rajya Sabha, BJP National President Amit Shah took on the Congress for shifting its stand on the NRC issue to suit its political interest and accused the Congress of not having the courage to identify illegal migrants.

He asserted that the National Registers of Citizens (NRC) is the “soul” of the 1985 Assam Accord signed former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. Shah said that a perception was being created that people who migrated from other states would also be sent back. “Those who come from others states have every right to stay in Assam. A perception is being created that Bengalis, Tamilians, Rajasthanis will be sent back,” he said.
