India’s best ever medal haul in Asian Games history: Asian Games 2018
India ended the Asian Games 2018 campaign with 69 medals. This includes 15 gold, 24 silver and 30 bronze medals. The Asian Games 2018 was held at Jakarta.
This year’s performance has been India’s best ever. It has even surpassed previous year’s 65 medal performance. The previous one was held at Guangzhou in China in 2010. India had won 14 gold, 17 silver and 34 bronze medals eight years ago.
India also equalled their best ever gold medal tally of 15 gold medals. The last time this feat was achieved was in 1951 in the New Delhi Asian Games.
This was also India’s best silver medal tally with a total of 24 silver medals. It was a huge increase from the previous highest silver medal tally of 19. This was achieved in the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.
In the last Asian Games in 2014, India had won 57 medals. This included 11 gold, 10 silver and 36 bronze medals.
Let us now remember the honourable players who brought the gold medals for the country in Asian Games 2018.
There is wrestler Bajrang Punia who won India’s first gold medal the Asian Games 2018. He won the gold in the 65 kg freestyle category. Next was Vinesh Phogat who created history becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win at the games. She won gold in the 50kg category.
Then comes Saurabh Chaudhury. The 16-year old became the youngest Indian shooter to win gold in the 10m air pistol event. Rahi Sarnobat was another history-maker. She became the first Indian woman shooter to win gold in the 25m pistol event.
Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan won the gold medal at men’s doubles tennis event. Tajinderpal Singh Toor won the gold in men’s shot put. Neeraj Chopra continued his impressive run in 2018 winning gold in javelin throwing.
Manjit Singh won the gold in 800m, Arpinder Singh in the triple jump, Swapna Barman in the heptathlon, Jinson Johnson in 1500m, women’s team in 4x400m relay, Amit Panghal in boxing and Pranab Bardhan and Shibhnath Sarkar in the bridge events won gold medals.
