Harivansh Narayan Singh of Janta Dal-United got elected to the post of Deputy Chairperson on Thursday. His candidature was backed by National Democratic Alliance. 125 MPs voted in his favour, while 105 MPs voted against him.
Harivansh Narayan Singh became the MP of Rajya Sabha on the ticket of Janta Dal (United) in 2014. Before entering into politics, he was a journalist who later became the Chief Editor Prabhat Khabar. He is also a published author and the recipient of a few awards for his exemplary work in the field of journalism.
He had briefly worked as an adviser to the former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar but went back to journalism after that government fell.
Mr Harivansh has always been very regular in the parliament with 89% of attendance on his name. He is also very vocal about the Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, and the banking sector crisis in the country, among other issues in the House.
He is preceded by P.J Kurien, who retired from the post on July 1, 2018.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also extended his heartfelt congratulation to Mr Harivansh on being elected as the Deputy Chairperson of the lower house of the parliament.
With the election of an NDA backed MP as the Deputy Chairperson, once again the BJP has shown its strength and majority in the lower house of the Parliament as well.
Though the margin of victory was very less, yet this victory must have boosted the morale of already buoyed NDA while the opposition must have been worried over the fact that despite having enough numbers all the opposition parties couldn’t get onto the same page over the election of Deputy Chairperson.
