Deeply saddened by the passing away of Kalaignar Karunanidhi. He was one of the senior most leaders of India.
We have lost a deep-rooted mass leader, prolific thinker, accomplished writer and a stalwart whose life was devoted to the welfare of the poor and the marginalised. pic.twitter.com/jOZ3BOIZMj

M Karunanidhi was born in 1924 in a small village in Tamilnadu. In his initial years of career, he worked as a screenwriter in the Tamil film industry. At his teens, Karunanidhi got influenced by the Dravidian movement led by the Periyar EVR. He became an ardent follower of CN Annadurai and joined the DMK when later founded it in 1949.
He also wrote many books, stories and poems, thus contributed to the Tamil literature as well. At the age of 37, he got elected as an MLA in 1957. And in the year 1969, he became the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu. Karunanidhi was Tamil Nadu Chief Minister five times between 1969-71, 71-76, 89-91, 96-01 and 2006-11. He is one of the few politicians in India to have never lost a single election in their entire political career spanning as long as more than six decades.
