After 23 Goals in 92 international appearances, The Arsenal Playmaker, Mesut Ozil retired from international football not because of poor fitness but because of Politics. Ozil had a key role when the Germans emerged to be victorious in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Mesut Ozil was also a part of the National Football team when the Germans were thrashed out of the FIFA World Cup 2018.
Mesut Ozil’s announcement was a shock to international football, much like the Champions premature exit in the FIFA WORLD CUP 2018 where Germany failed to clear the group stages and progress to the Round of 16. Ozil, who has deep roots in Turkey was criticized for posting a picture with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that sowed the seeds of questions to his loyalty towards the German National Squad. “In the eyes of Grindel and his supporters, I am German when we win but I am an immigrant when we lose,” Said Ozil’s statement.
Now that Mesut Ozil Retired, Things might change across Germany because, under Angela Merkel, Ozil was used as a poster boy in the country’s approach to integrating ethnic diversities. Germany also got caught in a scandal just a few weeks before UEFA would take a call on its bid to host Euro 2024, Turkey being the only competitor Germany has.
Also, this isn’t the first time a German Footballer has come under verbal attack. Earlier Jérôme Boateng suffered the same fate from a right-wing politician who sad that he wouldn’t want the Bayern Munich star as his neighbor.
“I’m glad this nightmare is over, He’s been playing crap for years.” Uli Hoeneß told the Reporters at the Airport. If Ozil got this treatment from his Bosses in the National football team, he might have been right to retire. Ozil’s agent did not hesitate one bit in replying to the 66-year-old Bayern Munich President.
On the other side of the story, Erdogan has always been a controversial leader and posing for a picture with him right before the Turkish elections without a political motive would be a little too naïve, no matter how much one might want to believe the German footballer
