The Apple versus TRAI scenario has led many to believe that Apple may become useless in India. Apple iPhone users may soon face deactivation. This is because Apple is not agreeing to a new mandatory compliance regulation enforced by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India(TRAI). Telecom operators will have to strictly follow the guidelines in order to curb pesky commercial calls and SMSes.
TRAI has just released Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulation. This fights the pesky calls by allowing subscribers to report directly. This is achieved by the DND 2.0 app released by TRAI. This app is now available on Google Play. But Apple hasn’t allowed TRAI to release its app on its App Store. This is because Apple does not allow third-party apps to get access to calls and SMSes.
This battle has been ongoing for over a year. Google has already agreed to TRAI’s terms. But Apple has denied them. This might lead to Apple devices being derecognized by TRAI. On derecognition, telecom service providers such as Airtel and Vodafone will be forced to deactivate mobile numbers used by iPhone users. In other words, users will be cut-off from mobile connectivity. Apple may become useless in India.
Apple’s iOS 12 will be having features to report such spam calls. But TRAI has not moved away from its mandates and conditions. This has already harmed the efforts of the company to sell more products.
Apple is ready and willing to take TRAI to court. Apple stated, “Trai has exceeded its jurisdiction by stipulating that telcos will have to shut down handsets that do not permit the regulator’s do-not-disturb (DND) app to be downloaded.”
